When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos? A Real Mom’s Guide

I remember struggling to figure out the best time for maternity photos when I was pregnant. I wanted to wait as long as possible so my belly would be big and beautifully round—but not too long, because what if I went into labor at 36 weeks and missed the photo opportunity altogether?

And then there was my sister warning me about the dreaded “pregnancy nose” (thanks, hormones and swelling). Of course, I wanted to feel beautiful in my photos. I had this dreamy vision of myself as a glowing goddess, standing on a beach at sunset, gliding into motherhood with grace. Reality? I was waddling, slightly out of breath, but still determined to capture that magic.

When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos? Here’s What to Consider

The short answer? Anytime after 30 weeks.

The longer answer? Every pregnancy is different. It really depends on what feels best for you and your family.

Some mamas feel amazing into their late 30s (weeks, not years!), while others feel more comfortable earlier on. I’ve had friends whose bellies looked full-term at 24 weeks, and others who barely showed until the third trimester. And if you’re navigating a high-risk pregnancy or just feeling less comfortable the further along you get, it’s totally okay—and smart—to schedule earlier.

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It’s all about timing, comfort, and real life. The best thing you can do? Talk to your photographer. I’ll meet you exactly where you are.

When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos (Technically Speaking)?

Most photographers recommend scheduling between 30 to 35 weeks—that sweet spot where your bump is beautifully round, and you still feel mobile (ish).

Why this window? Because:

  • You’re glowing (and your hair’s amazing).
  • Your bump is center stage.
  • You can still walk and pose without needing a break every five minutes.
  • Your energy hasn’t totally vanished (though snacks are still key).

Expecting multiples or have a history of early delivery? Consider booking between 26 to 30 weeks. Too early, and your bump may not show. Too late, and you might just want to nap—and honestly, fair.

Tip 1: The Best Time for Maternity Photos Might Surprise You

Maybe your ankles are swollen, your favorite dress doesn’t zip, and you’re living off crushed ice in pajama pants. Even at 39 weeks, there’s beauty in the realness.

Maternity photos aren’t about perfection—they’re about connection. I’m happy to photograph you at any point in your second or third trimester. As long as baby is still cozy inside, it’s never too late to celebrate this moment.

Tip 2: Location, Location, Location

Being strategic about your session location is key—especially if you’re navigating a high-risk pregnancy or feeling physically uncomfortable. In that case, you probably don’t want to drive an hour away or hike uphill for a sunset view (even if it sounds magical).

Instead, let’s keep it simple and close to home. Your neighborhood park? Perfect. We can still capture that dreamy golden-hour light with a tree-lined or natural backdrop—no stress, no long drives, and no uphill climbs required.

Tip 3: Outfits That Speak Chic, Confident, and Effortless

You’re the mama—and the star of this shoot. So start with your outfit first, then build the rest of the family’s looks around it. Love bold, vibrant colors? Go for it! Just balance things out by dressing your partner or little ones in softer, neutral tones.

Wear something that feels like you and shows off that beautiful bump. Whether it’s a breezy dress, something flowy and floral, or even a sleek bra and maternity jeans, the key is feeling confident, comfortable, and totally empowered.

Some of my favorite bump-friendly outfit sources:

  • Anthropologie – for soft, ethereal, floral dresses
  • Lulus – for elegant, bump-hugging bodycon styles
  • Hatch – for chic maternity jeans and cool, effortless basics

Tip 4. A Photographer Who Gets It (and Goes With the Flow)

Every pregnancy—and every family—is different. That’s why working with an experienced, flexible photographer is key. Whether you’re managing fatigue, juggling toddlers, or squeezing in a shoot between naps and snacks, I’ve got you.

We’ll pick an accessible location, plan around your comfort, and move through the session efficiently and joyfully. Got little ones? I’ll follow their rhythm, bring the patience—you bring the snacks and bubbles. We’ll make it feel more like a family playdate than a photoshoot.
