What to wear for senior portraits is one of the most common questions I hear from both seniors and parents preparing for graduation photos. Whether you’re planning senior portraits in Burlingame, San Mateo, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, or elsewhere on the San Francisco Peninsula, choosing the right outfits can help your photos feel confident, natural, and genuinely like you.
Senior year has a way of sneaking up on families.
One minute you’re dropping them off for kindergarten. The next you’re reading college acceptance letters, planning graduation parties, and wondering how these years passed so quickly.
Senior portraits are more than a yearbook requirement. They’re a chance to celebrate who your senior is right now before everything changes.
The good news is that choosing what to wear for senior portraits does not need to be stressful. You do not need a brand-new wardrobe. You do not need to follow every trend on social media. And you definitely do not need to know how to pose.
My goal is to make the experience easy for both seniors and parents by helping with location selection, outfit guidance, timing, and natural posing so your photos feel relaxed, confident, and truly like you.

If you’re wondering what to wear for senior portraits, I recommend bringing:
This simple formula creates variety while still feeling authentic.
The best senior portraits are not about wearing the most expensive clothes. They’re about wearing outfits that fit well, feel comfortable, and reflect who you are.
Most of my senior sessions include up to three outfit changes, which gives plenty of variety without making the session feel rushed.

Before we talk more about clothes, let’s address one of the biggest concerns seniors have.
“I don’t know how to pose.”
Perfect.
You don’t need to.
In fact, most of the seniors you see throughout my portfolio had never done a professional photoshoot before.
My job is to guide you through the entire experience.
I’ll help you choose a location that fits your personality, recommend outfits that photograph beautifully, and provide simple direction throughout the session so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands, where to look, or how to stand.
Instead of stiff poses, I use natural movement, easy prompts, and genuine interactions that create photos that feel relaxed and authentic.
Many seniors tell me afterward that the experience felt much easier than they expected.
That’s exactly how it should feel.
If being photographed feels a little intimidating, many of the same principles I use during senior sessions are covered in my guide on how to feel comfortable in front of the camera, including simple ways to relax and look natural.

One thing most outfit guides miss is that your location should influence your outfit choices.
The same outfit that works beautifully in Half Moon Bay may not be the best choice for Filoli, Stanford University, or an open field in San Mateo County.
The coast is one of my favorite locations for senior portraits on the San Francisco Peninsula.
The blue ocean, dramatic cliffs, and golden evening light create a beautiful backdrop that feels uniquely Northern California.
For coastal sessions, I recommend:
One of my favorite coastal looks is a flowy dress with movement. Lightweight fabrics like chiffon and linen photograph beautifully because they catch the ocean breeze and allow sunlight to filter through during golden hour.
Because Half Moon Bay and Pacifica can be surprisingly chilly, even during summer, I always recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket.

Garden locations throughout the San Francisco Peninsula create a completely different look from the coast.
Places like Filoli in Woodside, Gamble Garden in Palo Alto, and the Washington Park Rose Garden in Burlingame are especially beautiful during spring and early summer when flowers are blooming.
Outfits that photograph beautifully in garden settings include:
The lush greenery and colorful blooms create a naturally elegant backdrop.
For seniors who want a more academic or timeless feel, locations like Burlingame High School, Stanford University, and historic areas throughout San Francisco offer beautiful architecture and a polished look.
These locations pair especially well with:
These locations create a classic look that celebrates both where you’ve been and where you’re headed next.
Open fields and natural preserves throughout San Mateo County create beautiful golden backdrops, especially during summer and fall.
These locations pair beautifully with:
Open field locations often feel relaxed, adventurous, and full of movement.
Not sure where your session should take place? I’ve rounded up some of my favorite photo locations throughout the San Francisco Peninsula, from coastal cliffs and redwood groves to gardens and open fields.

| Location | Outfit Colors That Photograph Beautifully |
|---|---|
| Half Moon Bay | Blush, mustard, rust, pastel yellow, light denim |
| Pacifica | Terracotta, cream, soft pink, denim |
| Filoli | Ivory, baby blue, blush pink, floral dresses |
| Gamble Garden | Pastels, spring dresses, soft neutrals |
| Washington Park Rose Garden | Cream, yellow, pink, floral prints |
| Burlingame High School | College gear, polished casual outfits |
| Stanford University | Midi dresses, sweaters, cap and gown portraits |
| Open Fields in San Mateo County | Cream, dusty blue, western-inspired outfits |
| Redwood Groves | Sage, olive, camel, rust |
Certain colors consistently photograph well regardless of location.
I generally recommend avoiding:
If you’re still narrowing down outfit choices, my guide on choosing colors and outfits that photograph beautifully includes additional color palettes and styling tips that work well throughout the San Francisco Peninsula.

For girls, I recommend choosing outfits that feel comfortable, photograph beautifully, and reflect your personality.
Some favorite options include:
One of my favorite approaches is combining a dressier outfit with something you wear regularly.
Parents often love the polished portraits, while seniors frequently end up choosing the more casual images as their favorites because they feel the most like themselves.
Guys often assume senior portraits need to be complicated.
They don’t.
Simple almost always works best.
Some of my favorite combinations include:
The goal is not to dress like someone else.
The goal is to look like the best version of yourself.
Cap and gown photos are an important part of every senior session.
A few simple tips:
Many seniors love pairing cap and gown portraits with a few photos celebrating where they’re headed next.

I photograph both high school seniors and college graduates throughout the San Francisco Peninsula.
For college graduates, I recommend:
Stanford University, San Francisco, and downtown Palo Alto are especially popular locations for college graduation photos.
Senior portraits should reflect who you are during this season of life.
You’re welcome to bring:

Before your session:
To make your session feel even more prepared and stress free, I’ve put together a complete guide on what to bring to your portrait session, including practical items many families forget.

The college acceptance letters.
The anticipation of graduation.
The friendships, activities, and places that shaped these years.
These moments can feel ordinary today and priceless years from now.
My goal is to make preserving this milestone as easy as possible.
You do not need to know how to pose or have perfect outfits.
You simply need to show up and let me guide the rest.
Cream, ivory, pastel blue, butter yellow, blush pink, mustard yellow, and other soft neutral or pastel colors tend to photograph beautifully for senior portraits. They work especially well at Peninsula locations like Filoli, Gamble Garden, Stanford University, and the Washington Park Rose Garden, where they complement the natural surroundings without competing for attention.
Most seniors should bring 2 to 3 outfits for variety.
Not necessarily. Many of the best outfits are already in your closet.
Blue or charcoal jeans, khakis, button-down shirts, flannels, sweaters, and simple layers tend to photograph beautifully for senior portraits. These classic pieces feel relaxed, timeless, and allow your personality to take center stage.
Absolutely. Senior portraits should celebrate who you are during this exciting season of life.
Most seniors book during the second half of junior year or anytime during senior year. Spring and fall dates are often the most popular.
