Maternity photoshoot outfits should feel comfortable, beautiful, and true to who you are in this season of motherhood. Flowing dresses, soft natural tones, and timeless textures photograph beautifully throughout San Mateo County and the San Francisco Peninsula while highlighting the natural shape of pregnancy.
The best maternity photoshoot outfits are comfortable clothing that highlights your bump, allows movement and flow, and complements your location. Long dresses, fitted knit dresses, soft natural tones, and timeless textures photograph beautifully throughout the Bay Area and San Francisco Peninsula.

Let’s be honest.
Growing a tiny human is incredible.
It’s also hard work.
Whether you’re chasing a toddler through Burlingame, squeezing in one last coffee date in San Mateo, or wondering why none of your shoes fit anymore, you’re carrying a lot right now.
And if you’re researching maternity photoshoot outfits late at night while scrolling your phone, you’re definitely not alone.
One thing I want every mom to know is that maternity photos are not just for first-time parents.
Many of the families I photograph are welcoming their second or third baby. A maternity session becomes a beautiful opportunity to celebrate the entire family before everything changes again.
Many families also choose my Bump to Baby Bundle, which includes both a maternity session and an in-home newborn session. It’s a beautiful way to document the journey from pregnancy through your baby’s first days while keeping the planning simple and stress free.
If you’re considering a session, you can learn more about my Bay Area Maternity Photography experience and what to expect throughout the process.
The best maternity photoshoot outfits highlight your bump naturally while allowing you to move comfortably and feel confident.
I recommend neutral textures and soft knits that won’t distract from your bump. Brands like Quince offer timeless silhouettes that photograph beautifully and feel comfortable throughout your session.
Long, flowy dresses are one of my favorite choices for maternity photos.
When we’re walking together during your session, the dress moves naturally with you. If we’re photographing along the coast in Pacifica or Half Moon Bay, the breeze can catch the fabric and create gorgeous movement that adds life and softness to your images. Sometimes the sunlight even shines through the layers of the dress, creating a beautiful glow.
A long dress also gives us lots of options for highlighting your bump. We can use your hands to gently frame your belly, gather part of the dress to create shape, or incorporate movement that feels natural rather than overly posed.
Fitted dresses can be just as beautiful.
One of the biggest advantages of a fitted dress is that it naturally highlights your bump. If we’re photographing in a garden, redwood grove, or park filled with greenery, lighter colors such as ivory, cream, oatmeal, blush, sage, and pastels help your bump stand out beautifully.
Most importantly, choose comfortable clothing. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or worrying about how it fits, it becomes harder to relax and enjoy the experience.

One of the biggest factors when choosing maternity photoshoot outfits is where your session will take place.
The same dress can look completely different at the beach than it does in a redwood forest.
| Location Vibe | Best Colors | Colors to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal | Mustard, rust, terracotta, ivory, cream | Light blue |
| Garden | Blush, dusty rose, sage, cream | Neon colors |
| Redwood Forest | Ivory, oatmeal, camel, sage | Black |
| Open Field | Terracotta, olive, cream, mustard | Neon colors |

Think windswept, romantic, and full of movement.
Coastal locations often include wind, cooler temperatures, and dramatic scenery. Karl the Fog occasionally makes a surprise appearance, and temperatures can easily feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler than inland locations.
Because the ocean and sky are often shades of blue, wearing blue can sometimes cause you to blend into the background. Instead, consider colors that create contrast and help you stand out against the scenery.
Beautiful coastal colors include:
Long, flowy dresses are especially beautiful at the coast because the wind creates natural movement in the fabric.

Think soft, romantic, and colorful.
Garden locations offer incredible flexibility when it comes to wardrobe. Soft neutrals always work beautifully, but this is also a great place to wear color.
Beautiful garden colors include:
The greenery naturally creates contrast, allowing both neutral and colorful outfits to stand out beautifully.

Think earthy, organic, and timeless.
Redwood locations tend to be darker and moodier than open fields or beaches. Lighter colors help create separation from the background and keep the focus on you.
Beautiful redwood color palettes include:
I typically recommend avoiding black in heavily wooded locations because it can blend into the darker background and make your bump less visible.

Think golden, airy, and expansive.
Open fields photograph beautifully with both neutrals and richer earth tones.
Some favorite field colors include:
Flowing dresses work especially well in these locations because the open space allows for movement, walking, and natural interactions that feel relaxed and effortless.

The secret to beautiful family styling is coordination, not matching.
Start with mom’s outfit and build everyone else’s wardrobe around it.
If mom is wearing a cream dress:
I also recommend varying textures.
Combining linen, knit fabrics, cotton, and flowing materials creates depth and visual interest without looking overly coordinated.
If you’re including older siblings, many of the same styling principles from my What to Wear for Family Photos guide apply beautifully to maternity sessions.
And if you’re worried about bringing a busy toddler, my Tips for Family Photos with Toddlers guide can help everyone feel relaxed and prepared.

A few wardrobe choices can unintentionally pull attention away from your beautiful bump and connection.
Neon pinks, bright greens, and fluorescent oranges tend to reflect onto skin and create distracting color casts.
Big logos, graphics, and text often become the first thing people notice in a photo.
Small checkers, bold stripes, and highly detailed patterns can be distracting.
Instead of dressing everyone in the exact same color, aim for coordination and complementary tones.
A black dress photographed in a redwood forest or heavily shaded park can blend into the background and make your bump less visible.
Comfortable clothing almost always photographs better than uncomfortable clothing.

Not sure what else to bring? My guide on What to Bring to a Photoshoot includes a complete checklist for families preparing for their session.
Many moms love using Rent the Runway if they don’t want to purchase a dress they’ll only wear once.

Most families reserve their session during the second trimester and schedule photos between 28 and 34 weeks.
If you’re unsure when to schedule your session, my guide on the best time for maternity photos explains exactly when most families book.
Many parents also find it helpful to review maternity photography poses before their session to feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
If you’re just beginning your search, my maternity photography in San Mateo County guide covers locations, timing, outfit ideas, and what you can expect from the experience.
You may also find my pregnancy photography Bay Area guide helpful as you plan your session.
The best maternity photoshoot outfits for outdoor sessions include flowing dresses, fitted knit dresses, linen sets, and soft neutral colors that complement natural light and outdoor scenery.
Partners look best in complementary colors rather than matching outfits. Neutral button downs, lightweight sweaters, henleys, and chinos photograph beautifully.
Simple, comfortable clothing in coordinating neutral tones works best. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns.
Many Bay Area moms find beautiful options at Quince, PinkBlush, Free People, HATCH Collection, Worth Collective, and Rent the Runway.
I recommend purchasing your outfit at least two to three weeks before your session and doing a full try-on one week beforehand.

Pregnancy is one of the shortest and most transformative seasons of motherhood.
Between preparing for baby, organizing the nursery, and managing everyday life, it is easy to put yourself last.
But this chapter deserves to be remembered.
With thoughtfully chosen maternity photoshoot outfits, beautiful natural light, and a relaxed experience, you’ll create photographs that help you remember exactly how this season felt before your baby arrived.
Because before you know it, the bump you’ve been carrying will be the baby you’re holding.
If you’re looking for a calm, guided maternity photography experience on the San Francisco Peninsula, I’d love to help. From choosing the perfect location to coordinating outfits for the entire family, my goal is to make the process feel simple and enjoyable from beginning to end.
