Ready for family photos your whole family will enjoy?

What to bring to a photoshoot depends on the type of session you’re planning, but the essentials are often the same. Whether you’re preparing for family, maternity, newborn, senior, or headshot photos on the San Francisco Peninsula, a few thoughtful items will help you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy the experience.

As a photographer specializing in family photography, maternity photography, newborn photography, senior portraits, and headshots throughout San Mateo County and the San Francisco Peninsula, I’ve found that the best sessions begin with simple preparation, not overpacking. A few practical essentials allow you to relax while I guide you through a natural, connection driven experience.

What to Bring to a Photoshoot: Quick Checklist

For most sessions, one small backpack or tote is all you’ll need.

Essentials for Every Session

  • Water bottle
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Lip balm
  • Light sweater or jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Phone, keys, and wallet
  • Lint roller
  • Small mirror for quick touch ups

Helpful Extras

  • Neutral blanket
  • Backup outfit for babies or toddlers
  • Non messy snacks
  • Pet treats and leash if bringing your dog
  • Any meaningful personal item you’d like included

Packing light makes it easier to move naturally between locations while keeping the focus on your experience instead of your belongings.

What to Bring to a Family Photo Shoot

Families often ask me what to bring to a family photo shoot, especially when little ones are involved. The good news is that you don’t need much. Children are happiest when they feel comfortable, and a few familiar items can make all the difference.

If You Have Babies or Toddlers

Keep these items nearby:

  • Non-messy snacks like mini marshmallows or plain cereal
  • Water
  • Wet wipes
  • Snacks or treats
  • Backup outfit

Most of these items can stay tucked inside your bag until they’re needed. The less we carry during the session, the easier it is to move, play, and explore together.

Bringing Your Dog?

Dogs are always welcome.

Bring:

  • Neutral colored leash
  • Small treats
  • Water and portable bowl

We’ll usually photograph your entire family first before transitioning into smaller groupings, making the experience easy for everyone, including your four legged family member.

What to Bring to a Photoshoot for Maternity Sessions

Knowing what to bring to a photoshoot for maternity and newborn sessions helps you feel comfortable so you can focus on this exciting season rather than worrying about the details.

A few thoughtful items can help you feel your best throughout your session.

Consider bringing:

  • Comfortable flats between locations
  • Water bottle
  • Hairbrush
  • Lipstick or lip gloss for quick touch ups
  • Neutral cardigan or shawl
  • Ultrasound photos if you’d like to include them

Evening sessions on the San Francisco Peninsula can cool down quickly, especially near the coast. A lightweight layer keeps you comfortable without taking away from your outfit.

What to Bring to a Photoshoot for Newborn Sessions

For in-home newborn sessions, your home already has everything we need. A few extra supplies simply help us stay relaxed if baby needs a break.

I recommend having:

  • Extra diapers
  • Burp cloths
  • Swaddles
  • Bottles if bottle feeding
  • Pacifier if your baby uses one
  • A simple extra outfit

Newborn sessions always move at your baby’s pace. Feeding breaks, diaper changes, and cuddles are all part of the experience. There’s never any need to rush.

What to Bring to a Photoshoot for Senior Portrait Sessions and Headshot Sessions

Preparing for a senior portrait or headshot session is a little different than preparing for a family session. Along with the essentials, you’ll want to bring a few personal items that help you feel polished and confident.

Senior sessions often include multiple outfits, allowing you to show different sides of your personality.

I recommend bringing:

  • One or two additional outfits
  • Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
  • Jewelry and accessories
  • Hairbrush
  • Makeup for touch ups
  • Water bottle

If you’d like to personalize your session, you’re welcome to bring meaningful props such as a letterman jacket, sports equipment, musical instrument, books, or graduation cap.

What to Bring to a Photoshoot for Headshot Branding Sessions

Professional headshots are all about helping you look like your best, most confident self.

Bring:

  • Lint roller
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Makeup for touch ups
  • Lip balm or lipstick
  • Extra shirt or blazer if you’re planning multiple looks
  • Business props such as a laptop, notebook, camera, or favorite coffee mug for branding sessions

A few small touch ups throughout your session can make a big difference while keeping your photos looking natural.

What to Bring to a Photoshoot at Outdoor Locations

Outdoor sessions are one of my favorite ways to photograph families, couples, and individuals throughout the San Francisco Peninsula. A little preparation helps you stay comfortable while we enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Park Sessions

Local parks offer a wonderful mix of gardens, open fields, redwoods, and walking paths.

Bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light sweater
  • Water bottle
  • Hairbrush

Most parks require only a short walk from the parking area, so packing light makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Beach Sessions

Beach sessions often include cooler temperatures and coastal breezes, even during summer.

Bring:

  • Lightweight sweater or jacket
  • Hair ties or clips
  • Hairbrush
  • Comfortable shoes for sand and uneven trails

One of my favorite beach sessions had the most beautiful golden sunset, but the wind quickly picked up. A simple hairbrush would have made quick touch ups effortless. It’s one of those small items that families rarely think about but are always glad they packed.

Bringing Your Dog to Your Photoshoot

Dogs are part of the family, and they’re always welcome.

To help everything go smoothly, bring:

  • Neutral colored leash
  • Small treats
  • Water and portable bowl
  • Waste bags

If your dog will only be in a portion of the session, consider bringing another adult who can take your dog for a walk once we’ve finished the family portraits.

We typically begin with everyone together before moving into smaller groupings, making the experience calm and organized for both people and pets.

What Not to Bring to a Photoshoot

Sometimes packing less is the best decision.

Whenever possible, leave these items behind:

  • Large strollers on narrow trails
  • Bright snack packaging
  • Loud or flashing toys
  • Large bags you’ll need to carry throughout the session
  • Props we haven’t discussed ahead of time
  • Foods that stain clothing, hands, or teeth

During one family session, a stroller seemed like a necessity until we reached a narrow trail. Once it was returned to the car, their toddler happily explored on foot, and we were able to photograph beautiful moments in places we couldn’t have reached otherwise.

Simple preparation often creates the most relaxed experience.

The Night Before Your Photoshoot

A few minutes of preparation the evening before your session can make the entire experience feel easier.

Pack Your Bag

Gather everything you’ll need in one small backpack or tote.

Include:

  • Water
  • Hairbrush
  • Layers
  • Snacks and treats
  • Touch up items

Prepare Your Outfits

  • Lay out everyone’s clothing, shoes, and accessories the night before.
  • Check for wrinkles, stains, missing buttons, and pet hair so there are no last minute surprises.

Check the Weather

  • Even mild San Francisco Peninsula evenings can cool quickly after sunset.
  • If the forecast looks breezy or foggy, bring a coordinated sweater or light jacket for each person.

Get Plenty of Rest

  • Try to keep the day before your session as relaxed as possible. Well rested children and adults tend to feel more comfortable in front of the camera.

Leave a Little Early

  • Give yourself extra time for traffic, parking, and bathroom breaks. Arriving a few minutes early allows everyone to settle in before we begin.
  • When you don’t feel rushed, your photographs naturally feel more relaxed too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to a photoshoot?

Bring water, a hairbrush or comb, comfortable shoes, a light layer, and any session specific items such as snacks for young children, touch up makeup, or an extra outfit. You don’t need to overpack. A few thoughtful essentials are usually all you need for a relaxed session.

Should I bring multiple outfits?

It depends on your session. Family, maternity, and newborn sessions typically include one coordinated outfit, while senior portraits and branding sessions often include two or three outfit changes for added variety.

Should I bring props?

Usually, no. Genuine connection photographs beautifully on its own. If you’d like to include something meaningful, such as an ultrasound photo, a family heirloom, a graduation cap, or a favorite hobby, I’m happy to incorporate it naturally into your session.

What if it’s windy or cold?

Weather changes quickly on the San Francisco Peninsula, especially near the coast. I recommend bringing a coordinated sweater or light jacket, along with a hairbrush or comb. Wind often adds beautiful movement to your photographs, and we’ll simply adjust as needed.

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely. Dogs are always welcome. Bring a neutral colored leash, treats, water, and waste bags. We’ll usually photograph everyone together first before moving into smaller groupings.

What if my baby or toddler needs a break?

That’s completely expected. My sessions are relaxed and child led, with plenty of time for cuddles, snacks, diaper changes, or feeding breaks. Some of the sweetest photographs happen during these quiet moments.

Do I need to bring anything for an in-home newborn session?

Your home already provides the perfect setting. I recommend having diapers, burp cloths, swaddles, bottles if bottle feeding, and a simple extra outfit nearby. Everything else can unfold naturally at your baby’s pace.

Preparing for your session doesn’t have to be complicated. A few thoughtful essentials and a little planning are all you need to arrive feeling relaxed and confident. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you can focus on enjoying this season, whether we’re photographing your growing family, celebrating your pregnancy, welcoming a new baby, marking your senior year, or updating your professional headshots.
