Redwood Grove Los Altos photos are often captured at Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, a peaceful redwood park located just off University Avenue in Los Altos in Santa Clara County. Families across the San Francisco Peninsula and San Mateo County love this location because it offers the feeling of a quiet forest without requiring a long hike. Towering redwoods, a gentle creek, and wooden pathways create a magical setting for relaxed outdoor family photography, and the filtered canopy creates beautiful natural light that feels soft, flattering, and calm.
The grove was preserved in the 1920s to protect the native redwood trees and creek habitat, which gives the park a timeless feel today. Because the tall trees filter sunlight throughout the day, the most beautiful photos usually happen in the late afternoon when warm light begins streaming through the canopy.
Many families looking for Los Altos family photos or Palo Alto family portraits choose Redwood Grove because it feels calm and private while still being easy to reach from anywhere across the San Francisco Peninsula.

Choosing a Los Altos family photographer who already knows this grove makes a real difference on session day. I’ve photographed dozens of families here, so I know exactly where the light falls best, which corners stay shaded even in summer, and how to time a session so we catch that warm late afternoon glow.
As a San Francisco Peninsula family photographer, I guide every session at a relaxed pace, letting kids lead the exploration while I capture the connection unfolding naturally. Whether you’re coming from Los Altos, Palo Alto, or anywhere else across the Peninsula, my goal is the same: a calm, well guided experience that feels like a walk in the woods with your family, not a photo shoot.

Yes. Redwood Grove is one of the most unique Palo Alto family photo locations because it combines natural beauty with easy access.
Unlike larger parks that require long hikes, this grove is compact and peaceful. Within a few minutes you are surrounded by towering redwood trees, shaded trails, and a quiet creek.
This location works especially well for:
Because the space feels enclosed by trees, Redwood Grove Los Altos photos often feel intimate and cinematic.

Lighting is one of the most important factors for photography at Redwood Grove.
Because the redwoods are so tall, the grove stays shaded for much of the day. The most beautiful light appears about one to two hours before sunset when warm golden rays begin filtering through the trees.
This filtered light creates the soft glow that makes Redwood Grove Los Altos photos feel magical.
During sessions I gently guide families through the grove, positioning everyone where the light falls best while keeping the pacing calm and relaxed so parents can simply enjoy time with their children.

Parents often tell me they love Redwood Grove because it feels peaceful and simple.
Here are a few reasons families choose this location:
Even though the grove feels like a hidden forest, it is located right off University Avenue in Los Altos, making it convenient for families traveling from Palo Alto, San Mateo, or other Peninsula cities.

Yes. Redwood Grove is one of the most toddler friendly nature locations in the South Bay.
Children can walk along the wooden paths, explore the bridges, and peek at the creek. The environment naturally encourages movement and curiosity.
Instead of asking children to stand still, I guide families through playful moments. Kids lead the exploration while I photograph the connection unfolding naturally.
This approach is one reason Redwood Grove Los Altos photos often feel joyful and authentic.

Forest locations photograph beautifully with soft, natural clothing tones.
Colors that work well include:
Light fabrics such as linen, cotton, and soft knits add texture while still feeling relaxed. Because the redwoods create darker green surroundings, lighter clothing helps families stand out in the photos.

Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, often referred to simply as Redwood Grove Los Altos, is a small protected forest area located directly beside Shoup Park. Expect a short downhill walk into the grove that takes about five minutes. The trail is smooth and manageable for families.
Leashed dogs are welcome, which makes this a wonderful option for families who want to include their dog in photos. Small family photography sessions here typically do not require a permit, which makes planning simple.

Shoup Park sits directly beside Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, and my favorite insider tip is to park in the Shoup Park parking lot rather than looking for street parking along University Avenue. From there, you can walk in through the Shoup Park entrance straight into Redwood Grove to meet me for your session, an easy, well marked path that skips the guesswork of finding grove-adjacent parking.

Shoup Park also has public restrooms, conveniently located on the island in the parking lot, along with picnic tables where you can sit and rest. These tables are especially handy if you arrive early for a mini session and it’s not quite your time slot yet, a comfortable spot to wait with kids rather than standing around.
If your family needs a few extra minutes to burn energy before or after photos, the Shoup Park playground right next door is a perfect spot to let them run.
Because Shoup Park and Redwood Grove share this entrance, families often treat the whole visit as one relaxed outing, park, wait or play if needed, walk in for photos, then wind down at the playground or grab a treat downtown afterward.

Although Redwood Grove stays green year round, each season brings subtle differences to the landscape.
Because the tall trees filter light beautifully, Redwood Grove Los Altos photos look lovely in every season.

Many families enjoy turning their photo session into a small outing together.
After your session you can stop for ice cream in downtown Los Altos at Sweet Shop or The Penny Ice Creamery. Both are local favorites and perfect for celebrating a fun family photo day.
If you are heading back toward Palo Alto or the Peninsula, another nearby option is Gelato Classico Italian Ice Cream, a longtime favorite for creamy gelato and espresso.
