Family holiday photography is one of the most popular ways Bay Area families update portraits, create holiday cards, and preserve memories before another year passes.
Every year, families across the San Francisco Peninsula begin thinking about holiday cards, gifts for grandparents, and updating the photos hanging on their walls.
Family holiday photography is about more than checking a box on your holiday to do list. It is about preserving this season of life before it changes.
The missing front tooth.
The toddler curls.
The hand that still reaches for yours.
These are often the details parents treasure most years later.
I know family photos can feel overwhelming. Between coordinating schedules, choosing outfits, and hoping everyone cooperates, it is easy to put them off until the last minute.
My job is to make the experience feel easy, enjoyable, and stress free so you can focus on being together while I create images that feel like your family.

One of my favorite things about family holiday photography is seeing how much children change from year to year.
I photograph many families annually throughout Burlingame, San Mateo, Millbrae, Palo Alto, and Half Moon Bay. Every session feels like opening the next chapter of a family’s story.
A child who needed to be carried last year is now racing down the trail.
A toddler who was shy during their first session is suddenly eager to show me their favorite toy.
Parents often tell me they initially booked photos for holiday cards, but years later, those same images become some of their most treasured possessions.
Holiday cards get recycled.
The photos remain.
That is why many families throughout San Mateo County make family holiday photography part of their annual tradition.

If you have ever tried to schedule holiday photos in December, you probably know the feeling.
Every photographer is booked.
Holiday cards become a last minute scramble.
Outfits are rushed.
Many moms tell me:
“I waited too long and everyone was full.”
“We never figured out what to wear.”
“Our cards barely made it out before Christmas.”
The good news is that holiday photos do not have to feel this way.
With a little planning, family holiday photography can become one of the easiest and most enjoyable traditions of the year.

The question I hear most often is:
“When should we take our holiday photos?”
The answer depends on your holiday timeline.
For most Bay Area families, September and October are the easiest months for holiday photography.
September brings warm evenings and beautiful weather.
October offers gorgeous golden light throughout the San Francisco Peninsula.
Why families love booking early:
Some of my favorite fall sessions take place at Redwood Grove in Los Altos, Mori Point in Pacifica, and Leo J. Ryan Park in Foster City. The weather is often beautiful, and families are not yet feeling the pressure of holiday deadlines.

November is the perfect middle ground.
Early November still leaves plenty of time to receive your gallery and order holiday cards before Thanksgiving.
Many families love embracing the season at locations such as Filoli in Woodside, where holiday decorations and lights typically begin appearing in mid November. Kohl Mansion in Burlingame can also create a beautiful seasonal backdrop.
Another advantage of November sessions is timing. After daylight savings, sunset shifts earlier, which means golden hour often falls around 3 to 4 PM. That timing works beautifully for toddlers with early bedtimes.
November is also one of my favorite times for extended family photography.
Many families have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws visiting for Thanksgiving and other holiday gatherings. Since everyone is already together, it can be the perfect opportunity to update photos for the entire family while creating images that multiple generations will treasure.
The biggest challenge with November holiday photography is availability. By this point, many photographers throughout San Mateo County are already heavily booked, which is why planning ahead can make such a difference.
December can still be wonderful.
In fact, some of my favorite sessions happen when families stop worrying about holiday cards and simply focus on spending time together.
Winter lights, decorated downtowns, and festive locations create a magical atmosphere.
Families often love:
If you miss holiday card deadlines, don’t worry.
Many families choose to send New Year cards instead. January cards often feel less rushed and still give you a wonderful reason to share updated family photos with friends and family.
December is also a wonderful time for extended family photography. Holiday gatherings often bring together grandparents, adult siblings, cousins, and multiple generations who may not all be together again for months.
Rather than trying to coordinate another date later in the year, many families take advantage of holiday visits to create meaningful extended family portraits while everyone is already together.
Holiday cards are wonderful.
But the real goal is preserving the people you love in this season of life.
That makes December family photos worth it, even if the cards don’t go out until January.

Holiday mini sessions are designed to be quick, easy, and fully guided.
They are perfect for:
You’ll arrive, follow my guidance, and leave with beautiful updated photos without adding one more thing to your already busy holiday season.
Because holiday mini sessions are offered on only a few select dates each year, they often sell out quickly.
For many families, they are the easiest way to cross holiday photos off the list while still creating meaningful images.

While mini sessions are wonderful for many families, full holiday photo sessions offer the most flexibility and the most relaxed experience.
Full sessions are ideal for:
As a preschool photographer and toddler mom, I know children need time to warm up.
One of the biggest benefits of a full session is having space for snack breaks, exploration, and moments that unfold naturally.
Many parents tell me this is when their favorite images happen.

Wardrobe planning helps holiday photos feel timeless rather than trendy.
I recommend choosing two or three coordinating colors instead of matching exactly.
Colors that photograph beautifully include:
Textures such as knit sweaters, wool, corduroy, and velvet add warmth without feeling overly themed.

Holiday Card and Album Deadlines
A simple timeline many Peninsula families follow:
Planning ahead helps the entire season feel more relaxed.

Most families across San Mateo County book holiday and Christmas photos between July and September. Fall is one of the busiest times of year for family photography, and weekend golden hour sessions often fill first.
Booking early gives families the best selection of dates, locations, and times while ensuring there is plenty of time for holiday cards, gifts, and albums before the busy holiday season arrives.
Choose a Mini Session if you want updated holiday card photos in a quick and easy format.
Choose a Full Session if you want more time, outfit changes, multiple young children accommodated, greater flexibility, a personalized location, and a slower paced experience with more variety in your gallery.
The good news is that meltdowns do not prevent beautiful photos.
Children are allowed to be children.
If your child needs a break, we take one.
My goal is not perfect behavior. My goal is helping your family enjoy the experience and creating photos you’ll love.
Absolutely. Pets are always welcome at family sessions. Let me know when booking so we can choose a pet friendly location.
I recommend timeless colors, comfortable clothing, and coordinating rather than matching. Every family receives outfit styling guidance before their session.
Most family galleries are delivered within approximately 2 weeks. Expedited delivery may be available for families working with tight holiday card deadlines.
Absolutely. Availability becomes more limited later in the season, but November and December sessions can still create beautiful holiday memories.
November is often ideal for families wanting holiday cards before Thanksgiving, while December sessions are perfect for festive portraits, holiday gifts, and New Year cards.
I know family photos can feel overwhelming, but my job is to make the experience as joyful and stress free as the photos look.
Whether you’re planning holiday cards, gifts for grandparents, or simply want updated family portraits, I’d love to help you preserve this season of life.
