If you are thinking about including pets in newborn photos at home, you are probably wondering two things at the same time.
Is it safe?
And will my dog actually cooperate?
For so many San Mateo County and San Francisco Peninsula families, your dog was your first baby. They were there before the nursery was ready. Before the bassinet was assembled. Before you ever held your newborn.
That is why including pets in newborn photos at home can feel deeply important. They are part of this chapter.
We just approach it thoughtfully. Calmly. And always with safety first.

This guide walks you through how I safely include pets during newborn sessions, how to prepare your dog ahead of time, and how we structure the session so it feels calm and manageable for everyone.
Including pets in newborn photos at home is not just a cute idea. For many families, it feels essential.
If you had your pet before your first baby, they were in everything. Engagement photos. Maternity sessions. Quiet nights on the couch. They were your practice baby.
Now, if you have a toddler and a pet and a brand new baby, this is your complete family.
Your toddler and your newborn will grow up with this dog or cat. This is your baby’s first pet. And these are your baby’s first few days of life.
That combination is incredibly sentimental.
We also know pets do not live forever. And many families in Burlingame, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and across the Peninsula tell me they want these images now because this overlap is fleeting.
Golden retrievers in Burlingame homes resting beside the couch. Small dogs in San Francisco condos perched near the nursery doorway. Apartment pets adjusting to new sounds in city spaces.
These moments are layered with meaning.

Dog and newborn photography must always be safety forward.
Even the sweetest dog is still adjusting to a new human in their environment.
Here is how I prioritize safety:
Many of the most beautiful images do not require direct contact at all.
Baby can be safely held while your dog lies nearby. Or baby can rest in a bassinet while your dog sits calmly at mom’s feet.

Going into an in home newborn session with pets and a baby, we absolutely want a plan.
Newborn sessions typically last about an hour, sometimes longer depending on how baby and family are feeling.
The pet will not be in every picture. And that is intentional.
We usually:
If your dog is calm and simply wants to lie nearby while we photograph around them, that is wonderful.
But many pets get excited when someone new arrives. They want to inspect the camera bag. Sit directly where we are shooting. Be involved in everything.
That is normal.
In those cases, I often recommend putting the pet in another room for part of the session. Or letting them rest in their daybed in the corner while we photograph baby alone, toddler portraits, or parent moments.
Then we bring them back in intentionally.
This approach reduces stress significantly.
The first few days with a newborn are already overwhelming. You are managing feedings around the clock. Diaper changes. Interrupted sleep. Toddler emotions.
My goal is to minimize pressure.
We absolutely include your pet. We just do it in a way that feels calm and manageable.

Timing matters.
I never begin the session with the dog.
We start with baby and immediate family portraits so your newborn can settle and your dog can observe.
Later in the session, after:
We invite your pet in for a short, calm window.
We only need a few minutes to create something meaningful.
Short and intentional always works better than trying to keep your pet involved the entire time.
Let’s be honest.
Your dog may:
That is completely normal.
Including pets in newborn photos at home is not about orchestrating perfection. It is about documenting presence.
Sometimes one or two frames are all we need.
Those images will carry so much weight.

Yes, when structured intentionally. Baby is always supervised and supported.
We schedule after exercise and keep participation short.
Absolutely. Many San Francisco families live in condos. We adapt composition and spacing accordingly.
We capture what they give us. Even one meaningful image is enough.

This chapter is about transition.
Your dog adjusting.
You adjusting.
Your baby settling into the world.
Including pets in newborn photos at home tells the complete story of your family exactly as it is in these early days.
If you are in San Mateo County or anywhere on the San Francisco Peninsula, it is absolutely possible.
With safety.
With flexibility.
With realistic expectations.
You deserve images that feel like your real life.
And that includes the four legged family member who was there first.
