As a San Jose photographer serving the Bay Area, I’ve seen a lot of beautiful backdrops. That said, Alviso Marina County Park stands out. Oh, this place is truly one-of-a-kind year-round. If you’re a mom chasing that perfect blend of sunshine, smiles, and wind-in-your-hair family vibes, look no further. Without a doubt, Alviso Marina County Park has quickly become one of my go-to locations for unique, natural, golden-hour sessions.
Whether your little one is running wild or just wants to snuggle in your arms, this spot has it all. For starters, there are tall grasses, endless skies, and wide, white salt flats that look like you’re vacationing in the Arctic.

Even better, what looks like snow on the ground is actually dried salt. And when the sun hits it just right during summer? It transforms into a snowy wonderland, complete with a stunning sunset reflecting across the flats. Alviso Marina County Park delivers that rare mix of soft drama and natural beauty. The boardwalks, marshes, dry golden grass, and especially the picturesque door frames scattered throughout offer endless photo opportunities and frame-worthy moments.
Let me take you behind the lens and share why Alviso Marina County Park is the perfect spot for your next family photoshoot.

Let’s be real, that golden glow is EVERYTHING. At Alviso Marina County Park, the open space and flat terrain let the sun pour in from every direction. Add a soft breeze blowing through your flowy dress? It’s cinematic in the best way. You get that beautiful, backlit effect that makes every hug, kiss, and twirl feel timeless and full of romance.
There’s zero pressure here. Your toddlers can run, jump, dance, and make silly faces. The salt flats and trails are safe and open, and I guide sessions with gentle prompts to keep things fun and natural.
There’s so much to love about this location. Grassy meadows, wooden bridges, a quirky little house frame, and wide-open salt flats make Alviso Marina County Park incredibly versatile. You can go from cozy and earthy to clean and modern, all within just a few steps.

That golden beam peeking through their son’s grin? 100% real and 100% joyful. These moments unfold naturally when the lighting is just right, and Alviso Marina County Park never disappoints.

This is what I mean by letting kids lead the fun. We laugh, play, and let go of expectations. The result? Pure joy.

That quirky frame is a hidden treasure. It adds architectural interest without taking away from the natural landscape.

The soft pastel glow here is unreal. Even as the sun dips low, the white salt reflects the light beautifully, giving us more time to capture dreamy images.
To start, I recommend scheduling your session 60 minutes before sunset. That’s when the light is at its dreamiest and gives your photos that warm, timeless glow. The sun is low, the heat has eased, and your family will feel most relaxed and comfortable.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend this location during the day, as the sunlight can be harsh and unflattering. There just aren’t enough shaded areas to work with, which makes golden hour truly the best time to take advantage of the soft light and stunning backdrops. That said, on a cloudy or overcast day, this location works beautifully even earlier thanks to the wide open skies and diffused lighting.

First things first, it can be a bit chilly and breezy, especially in the evening. On a summer night in San Jose, you can usually get away with a dress and a light button-up. An airy dress looks especially beautiful when the wind catches it, instant magic!
Next, choose bold colors that pop against the white salt flats, and go for soft, flowing fabrics that photograph like a dream. Earthy tones and warm hues complement the park’s natural tones perfectly. Some of my favorite bold colors are mustard yellow, navy blue, or coral red. And mamas, if it feels natural for you, don’t be afraid to rock a bold lipstick too. It can really elevate your look!
Lastly, need help with outfits? I offer a style guide with every booking. Just shoot me an email with your color palette or outfit ideas, and I’ll gladly share suggestions!

Let’s be honest, worrying about toddler cooperation or surprise meltdowns is totally normal. But here’s the thing: Alviso Marina County Park makes it easy. Kids can explore and play while I quietly capture all the candid in-between moments.
In fact, little ones are often completely enchanted by this place. They’ll be running across the wooden decks, peeking into salt ponds, and playing hide-and-seek behind the wooden frames scattered throughout. Best of all, there’s convenient parking right at the entrance, which makes arriving (and leaving) with kids a breeze.

Is the water really pink year-round?
Yes! The striking pinkish hues are caused by salt-tolerant microorganisms and minerals leftover from the region’s historic salt mines. So yes, it’s just as gorgeous in January as it is in July.
Can my kids ride bikes here?
Yes, the park’s wide pathways are bike-friendly, but check for updates before your visit.
Can we bring our dog?
Dogs are allowed in the County Park’s pathways and picnic areas, but they are not permitted on the trails, levees, and boardwalks.
What time does the park close?
Alviso Marina County Park closes at sunset. Be sure to leave by the time posted in the parking lot to avoid fines.

I’m not just here to take pretty pictures, I’m here to guide your family through a meaningful experience. The stunning photos are just the icing on top. A photography session is so much more than a few photos to print or post. More importantly, it’s about the experience itself. What a gift to spend an hour with your partner and children, reaffirming your love and connection. During your session, time slows down, and you get to explore, play, and simply be together as a family.
At the same time, I’m quietly capturing it all, the in-between moments, the laughter, the tenderness. The way your daughter wraps her arms around your neck. The way your son belly laughs when dad swings him upside down. After all, these little moments are actually the big ones.
Ultimately, Alviso Marina County Park offers the space, light, and calm to let them happen naturally. Every session here feels like an adventure. And the final gallery? A golden-hued keepsake capturing your family’s love and connection.

I remember when I was pregnant, everything felt like a big decision. What to eat, what to wear, what crib to buy… and of course, how to prepare for maternity photos and what maternity photography poses to do during the shoot. At the same time, whether you’re stepping in front of the camera for a […]
