Coyote Point: The Perfect Location for Family Photos

Planning family photos in San Mateo? Look no further than Coyote Point. This Bay Area gem has everything moms want: gorgeous scenery, easy parking, and plenty of room for kids to run wild before (and after) the shoot. In this post, I’ll walk you through why Coyote Point recreation area is one of my go-to family photography spots, what to expect when you’re there, and how to make your session stress free and fun.

Why Coyote Point is a Mom’s Dream Spot for Photos

If you’re a busy mom trying to juggle nap schedules, snack demands, and outfits that don’t involve Paw Patrol logos, you need a location that just works. That’s why Coyote Point is pure magic.

Here’s why moms love it:

  • Easy parking. No long treks juggling toddlers, diaper bags, and strollers. Parking is $6 per car, and honestly, the views make it worth every penny.
  • Scenic variety. Think eucalyptus groves, beachy waterfront, open lawns, and even a castle-like playground.
  • Kid friendly. Your kids can explore before, during, or after photos, which makes bribery with the playground super easy.

The Scenery at Coyote Point (and Why It Photographs So Well)

Golden hour at Coyote Point is simply breathtaking. The light filters through tall eucalyptus trees, bounces off the San Francisco Bay, and creates that warm glow every mom wants in her photos.

Some of my favorite backdrops include:

  • Eucalyptus groves for that dreamy forest vibe.
  • Bay views with the water and planes in the background.
  • Open fields where kids can run and play while I capture candid laughter.

Insider tip: it can get windy near the water, so bring layers and maybe a hairbrush.

Tips for Planning Your Family Session

Timing Is Everything

Golden hour, about 1–2 hours before sunset at Coyote Point, is pure magic for family photos. The light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. If your little ones are early risers, a morning session can work too, with cooler temps and fewer crowds.

Keep the day boring before the shoot

I recommend keeping your kid’s day as calm and low-key as possible before photos. Make sure they get their nap and a good snack ahead of time. The goal is to save their energy and excitement so they can shine during the shoot instead of burning out before we even start.

Snacks, Snacks, Snack

Always pack a little snack or treat—think marshmallows or white chocolate, something that won’t stain teeth. Photos go so much smoother when no one is hangry. Plus, a favorite treat can be the perfect bribe for those extra cuddles and sweet kisses. And with the playground right next door, snacks become your golden ticket for “just a few more photos.”

What to Wear for Your Coyote Point Family Session

Choosing the right outfit helps your photos feel natural, timeless, and connected. Here are my top tips for what to wear:

  • Opt for comfortable clothing: Flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, or casual jeans let you move freely and play with your kids.
  • Stick to timeless colors: Neutral tones with earthy pops look beautiful against both the open fields and waterfront at Coyote Point.
  • Skip the heels: Flat shoes, boots, or booties are perfect for dry grass and uneven trails. You can always change into another pair of shoes once we arrive at the photo location.
  • Bring layers: Coyote Point can get breezy by the bay, so pack a warm layer to stay comfortable throughout your session.
  • Avoid strollers: The trails can be tricky, so it’s best to leave strollers behind.
  • Carry one light bag: A small backpack or bag for the whole family is ideal for jackets, snacks, phone, and other essentials.
  • Wear safe walking shoes: Flat or hiking-style shoes (like Blundstones) are best for walking the trails safely.

By following these tips, you’ll not only feel confident during your session but also create photographs that are natural, stylish, and timeless.

Things to Do at Coyote Point

Coyote Point is more than just an amazing photoshoot location. It’s a place you’ll want to come back to with your family again and again.

  • Magic Mountain Playground. Let the kids run wild at this castle-like play space. With over 500 five-star Google reviews, you know it’s a winner.
  • Bay Trail stroll. Take a walk along the Bay Trail and watch planes glide in and out of SFO. Kids love spotting them.
  • CuriOdyssey Museum. Meet otters, owls, and other local wildlife up close while exploring interactive science exhibits. Bonus: members get free parking, which covers the $6 entrance fee.

Insider Mom Tips for Stress-free Photos at Coyote Point

Because I’m a mom myself, I get it, family photos can feel stressful. But with Coyote Point, you’ve already won half the battle.

Here’s how to make it even easier:

  • Arrive early. Let the kids explore and warm up for 10 minutes before we start. Getting the wiggles out makes a huge difference.
  • Bring layers. Since Coyote Point sits right next to the bay, it can get breezy. I’ve scouted a few sheltered areas that aren’t as windy, so we’ll still capture gorgeous scenery shots. Dress warmly and wear comfy shoes, boots, or booties because we’ll be walking through dry grass.
  • Plan ahead for bathrooms. There aren’t any nearby, so it helps to cut water about two hours before the shoot.
  • Embrace the candid moments. Some of the best photos are your kids running, giggling, or giving you that squishy-faced hug.

Why I Love Photographing Families at Coyote Point

I’ve photographed at Coyote Point many times, and each session feels unique. Maybe it’s the way the sunlight streams through the eucalyptus grove, or how the waves sparkle behind a family hug. Maybe it’s just the joy of kids having space to run free. Whatever it is, this place makes families feel at ease, and that’s when the magic happens.

Every family I’ve shot here walks away with images filled with connection, laughter, and genuine love. And honestly, that’s what makes me happiest as a photographer.
