Looking for a gorgeous location for family photos that’s both relaxed and stunning? Say hello to the Arizona Cactus Garden (also known as the Arizona Garden) in Palo Alto.
I had the absolute joy of photographing my sister and her son there on a cloudy afternoon. Tucked away near Stanford, this unique gem is filled with towering succulents and winding dirt paths that make everything look magical — and it’s free to visit! Honestly, it’s a dream spot for lifestyle family photography, especially if you’re a busy mom who wants beautiful, natural photos without the chaos.
As a mom and photographer, I get how stressful planning a session can feel. But this location? It makes everything simpler—and a whole lot more beautiful.
Why I Love the Arizona Cactus Garden
A Hidden Gem on the San Francisco Peninsula
First things first: the arizona cactus garden is peaceful. Which, as a mom, I know is worth its weight in gold. With open space and a gentle, natural layout, it’s perfect for capturing kids just being themselves.
They can run, explore, and play —and we’ll get all those candid, in-between moments that are the best! The soft desert tones and filtered sunshine help everything (and everyone) glow.

A Real-Life Session: My Sister + Nephew
This shoot was especially meaningful because I got to photograph my sister and her son during such a fun stage of toddlerhood—busy, curious, and full of big energy.
We ran down sandy paths, played peekaboo behind cacti, and paused for some snuggly bench moments in between. Not every photo was picture-perfect, but that’s exactly what made them perfect.
Looking for tips on what to wear for a session here? I wrote a full what to wear guide for family photos that’s full of relaxed, mom-friendly advice.

What to Wear for Arizona Cactus Garden Photos
Neutral + Playful Always Wins
The desert landscape pairs beautifully with soft, earthy tones—think ivory, olive, blush, or dusty blue. In this session, my sister wore a satin skirt with a relaxed white linen top. Her son wore khakis and a striped sweater that added just the right amount of personality.
Not sure where to shop? I love Old Navy and H&M Kids for kids’ pieces options, and Lulus for beautiful, camera-ready pieces for moms.
It’s About the Feeling, Not the Posing
At the end of the day, my goal isn’t to get everyone to sit still and smile at the camera. Instead, I want to capture joy, connection, and the real relationships that make your family yours. That’s why I love the arizona cactus garden—it gives us the space and vibe to for naturaly joyful photos.
