Filoli Garden in Woodside

For families who want elegant variety in a calm, private setting

Filoli Gardens in Woodside has a magical secret garden feel that’s perfect for families wanting beautiful, timeless photos. With seasonal blooms almost year-round, it’s one of the most consistent and stunning locations I offer.

  • Best photoshoot time: Saturday mornings at 9am during members-only hours offer soft light and calm energy. Weekdays at 10am, when the garden opens to the public, also give us beautiful gentle light and open shade throughout the property.
  • Parking: Free private lot near the entrance with admission
  • Accessibility: Paved paths, stroller-friendly
  • Crowds: Light on weekday mornings
  • Weather: Mild spring temperatures
  • Tickets & Fees: Entrance tickets are required to photograph or visit Filoli. I hold a 2026 membership that includes complimentary admission for up to two additional adults and all children. This is already covered in your family session fee. If you’d like to include more adults, you’ll just need to purchase their tickets separately.
  • What to wear: Soft pastels and neutrals like cream, sage, and pale blue look beautiful against garden backdrops. Midi or maxi dresses, skirts, or wide-leg pants keep things breezy and flattering. Heels or wedges work well here since the paths are paved and easy to walk on.
  • Peak blooms: There’s always something blooming from Spring to Fall:
    • Magnolias (Feb–Apr)
    • Cherry Blossoms (Feb–Apr)
    • Tulips (Mar–Jun)
    • Roses (Apr–Sep)
    • Peonies (Mar–May)
    • Wisteria (Jun–Jul)
    • Hydrangeas (Jun–Oct)
    • Lavender (May–Oct)
  • Pick this if you want: All-in-one blooms in a garden that feels both grand and cozy

Best Spring Bay Area Photography Spot on the Coast

Wild Mustard Fields in Half Moon Bay

For families who love open spaces, bright color, and real movement

The coast turns golden during mustard bloom season, and it’s the perfect time to capture playful, dreamy family photos. These vibrant fields create a magical, sun-drenched backdrop for images that feel light, joyful, and timeless.

  • Best photoshoot time: In recent years, the field has opened to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. The best light is at 10am or around 4pm, right when the gates open or the hour before they close.
  • Admission: $10 for adults, $5 for kids
  • Parking: No official lot, but there’s easy roadside parking nearby
  • Accessibility: Uneven dirt paths (not stroller-friendly)
  • Crowds: Busy on weekends during peak bloom, but there’s plenty of room to spread out
  • Weather: Cool, coastal breezes with crisp spring air
  • What to wear: White or yellow outfits look stunning against the golden mustard backdrop. Bring a light jacket or sweater since it’s often breezy by the coast. Leave your best clothes at home since a bit of yellow pollen is almost guaranteed. Comfortable boots or shoes are best for walking through uneven paths and dirt.
  • Peak blooms: The mustard fields usually bloom from mid-February to mid-March. The season is short and unpredictable, so I stay in close contact with Iacopi Farms and only schedule sessions when the field is at its golden peak.
  • Pick this if you want: A one-of-a-kind, golden floral backdrop that feels natural, cinematic, and absolutely perfect for vibrant, joyful family photos.
  • Why families love it: It’s freeing. Kids can be wild, curious, and completely themselves and you still walk away with gorgeous photos. There’s plenty of parking along the road, but keep in mind there are no bathrooms, shade, or water. Come prepared, but trust me, it’s worth it.

“My toddler didn’t want to leave. It felt like a storybook field.” – Client Dad

I scout the field in person each season and schedule sessions only when the bloom is at its peak.
