Planning family photos in San Mateo County?

These family photoshoot tips will help you show up relaxed and ready. No Pinterest perfect expectations required. We’ll cover exactly what to prep, when to prep it, and how to keep your crew smiling from start to finish.

Family Photoshoot Tips: One Month Out – Make Decisions Early to Avoid Last Minute Stress

This is the time to get the ball rolling without overwhelm.

  • Order outfits now to avoid shipping delays or size issues
  • Try on all the clothes together. What looks cute online doesn’t always feel great IRL
  • Check the vibe. Pick colors that complement not match. Think soft neutrals or rich fall tones
  • Comfort wins. Kids need freedom to move. Parents too

Client quote: “I’m so glad we planned ahead. I would’ve totally forgotten socks without that checklist!”

One Week Out: Hydrate, Trim, and Keep It Chill

Here’s where your prep makes a difference in how you look and feel.

  • Drink water like it’s your job. Glowy skin starts here
  • Skip salty takeout and alcohol. They can cause puffiness and low energy
  • Electrolytes like LMNT or AG1 can help
  • Schedule haircuts. Especially for boys with fast growing fringes

Real mom moment: “I didn’t realize how much water helped until I actually did it. Total game changer.”

The Day Before: Avoid the Last Minute Panic

This is your day to set everything out so morning feels like a breeze.

  • Lay out each outfit and all accessories
  • Steam or iron. One client had the perfect dress but forgot to iron it. The wrinkles were super visible in every shot. She asked me to Photoshop them out. I don’t do heavy editing and honestly it’s nearly impossible to make it look natural
  • Check for lint, tags, or stains
  • Plan bedtime early. Everyone’s happier when rested

Family Photoshoot Tips: Shoot Day – Keep It Simple and Sane

Want the best photos? Don’t overschedule or stress out.

  • Feed the family. Full bellies equal happy faces
  • Let toddlers nap. Or at least have some quiet time
  • Snacks in the car. Bribery works. No shame here
  • Keep your expectations light. I’ll handle the posing and flow. You focus on being present

Client quote: “It honestly felt like a fun family outing. My kids didn’t even realize we were taking photos!”

Why I Always Recommend Golden Hour

Golden Hour is that dreamy soft light that happens just before sunset. It creates a natural glow, flatters every skin tone, and adds that warm, magical touch to your images. It’s also when kids tend to feel most settled after naps, dinner, and a little playtime, they’re calm and ready to connect.

Since we’ll be shooting during this golden window, that glow is on our side. Some of my favorite San Mateo Peninsula spots for Golden Hour light include:

  • Laurelwood Park, San Mateo
  • Coyote Point, San Mateo
  • Washington Park, Burlingame
  • Mori Point Beach, Pacifica
  • Rockaway Beach and Pampas Fields, Pacifica
  • Redwood Grove Nature Preserve, Los Altos
  • Lands End, San Francisco
  • Arizona Cactus Garden, Palo Alto

Client quote: “We caught the sun peeking through the trees and I teared up. It was just so beautiful.”*he sun peeking through the trees and I teared up. It was just so beautiful.”

What You Don’t Need to Worry About

  • Tantrums. I’m a mom too. We’ll work around it
  • Your arms. I know your angles. I got you
  • Looking awkward. I’ll guide you every step of the way
