San Francisco Dog Photographer: Photo Session Tips

Looking for a San Francisco dog photographer who gets it? One who knows your pup is family and you want photos that feel like you? I got you. Whether you’re wrangling toddlers or just you and your four legged ride or die, a photo session with dog should be joyful, fun, and something you actually look forward to. Let’s make it easy.

TL;DR: What You’ll Learn in This Blog

  • How to prepare for a photo session with dog
  • What to wear (for you and your pet)
  • Real stories from dog friendly sessions in the Bay Area
  • Why San Francisco dog photographer sessions should always include pets at no extra cost
  • Pro tips to help your pup shine in front of the lens

Why You Should Book a Photo Session with a San Francisco Dog Photographer

Because they’re family. Plain and simple. I grew up with a Pomeranian and a Frenchie (aka maximum cuteness). These days, our Belgian Malinois is in every single one of our family pictures. If they’re part of your everyday, they should be in the frame, too.

As a San Francisco dog photographer, I don’t charge extra to include pets in your session. They’re not accessories. They’re companions. Loyal, sweet, and worth remembering.

Photo Spots Recommendations by A San Francisco Dog Photographer

You want a backdrop that’s as gorgeous as your pup. Some favorites:

1. Fort Funston, San Francisco

A popular, off-leash dog park, known for its sandy trails and a dog-friendly beach, offering a mix of open space, scenic hikes, and a vibrant dog-loving community.

2. Leo Ryan Park, Foster City

A scenic spot in Foster City with bridges, water views, and lots of space to sniff and play. Great for a relaxed, natural photo session with dog.

3. Washington Park, Burlingame

Perfect for families and smaller dogs. I once photographed a woman and her two Pomeranians in matching tutus here. She loved the results so much, she upgraded to the full gallery.

4. Mori Point, Pacifica

Want ocean views? I photographed a man and his dog here. Both were in teal blue custom Filipino outfits. That image with the waves crashing behind them? Pure magic.

What to Wear for a Photo Session with Dog from a San Francisco Dog Photographer

For Your Pup:

  • Naked is totally fine! Their beautiful fur is often the best accessory.
  • Add a pop of personality with a simple, color-coordinated bandana.
  • Feeling fancy? Custom outfits (even cultural ones!) can be adorable and meaningful on camera.

For You and Your Family:

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Think soft earth tones, cozy textures, and layers that move with you.
  • Skip the neon and loud logos (unless that’s totally your vibe)!
  • Choose comfort first. You’ll be sitting, running, or snuggling on the ground, so dress for movement and play.

Here are some of my favorite dog clothing shops:

  • Target: Affordable, adorable dog clothes, bandanas, and leashes.
  • rororiri: Stylish and comfy apparel designed in San Francisco. Visit their shop in Stanford Mall, Palo Alto.

Keep Your Dog’s Leash Low Key (Because I Don’t Photoshop It Out)

Let’s talk leashes. They’re kind of like socks with sandals. They’re practical but they can ruin the vibe in your photos real quick.

When you’re prepping for your San Francisco dog photography session, opt for a minimal, neutral colored leash, so think beige, black, or soft earth tones. Something slim and simple. Why? Because bold, bright, bulky leashes can be super distracting in your final gallery.

And just a heads up: I don’t photoshop leashes out. I believe in keeping it real and beautiful, not overly retouched.

PRO TIP: Remove anything that adds visual clutter like oversized poop bag holders or jingling accessories. Clean lines mean cleaner photos.

It’s the little things that make your pup (and your session) shine.

A San Francisco Dog Photographer Tips to Make Your Dog Photo Session Easy and Fun

  • Let me know ahead of time that you’re bringing your dog. I’ll bring extra patience, creativity, and treats!
  • Bring high value treats or toys. Great for getting their attention.
  • Expect some chaos. It’s part of the charm.
  • I’ll help hold the leash when we’re capturing solo shots of you or your kids.
  • Don’t stress. I know how to work with dogs big or small, feisty or chill, trained or… not so much.

Real Clients, Real Joy

“My toddler didn’t want to leave!” — a mom from a recent session at Laurelwood Park where I helped hold the leash while she got a solo shot with her husband.

“This was my first ever photoshoot, and bringing along my two little pups could’ve made it tricky, but she made the entire experience effortless.” — 5 star review from a first time client with two tutu wearing Poms.

Why A San Francisco Dog Photographer Sessions Should Feel Easy

My style is relaxed, professional, and joy filled. I guide you with poses and prompts so you can relax and enjoy your session with your pets. I also make space for real moments to unfold. Licks, tail wags, snuggles, and yes, the occasional zoomie.

You don’t need a perfect dog or a perfect plan. You just need love and a little light. I’ll take care of the rest.
