Photo Session With Dog A Fun Easy Way to Capture Your Real Life

Looking for a fun, relaxed way to take family photos and include your dog? A photo session with dog is one of the best ways to create images that feel true to your life. Whether you’re a busy parent, a single pet parent, or a couple with a fur baby, your pet is a big part of your story and they deserve to be in the frame.

In this blog, I’m sharing how to prep for a pet-friendly family session, what to expect, and my favorite tips for making the whole experience fun, easy, and (mostly) chaos-free.

Why You Should Do a Photo Session With Dog

I’m a dog mom myself, and we never skip including our pup in our annual family photos. It’s one of my favorite traditions and always results in some of the most joyful, genuine memories we have. Dogs don’t live as long as we do, and having them in our family photos means we’ll always have something to look back on as a way to remember their personality, their love, and the special role they played in our lives.

Pets aren’t just “extras” they’re family. Yet so many people leave them out of family photos. A photo session with dog gives you:

  • Frame-worthy photos that include your whole family
  • Memories of your pet at the age they are right now
  • Candid, playful energy that makes photos feel less stiff
  • A way to honor the bond you share with your furry sidekick

“I booked the session for my kids, but my favorite shot ended up being the one with our dog licking my son’s face.”

Whether you’re planning a holiday card, a keepsake album, or just want cute Instagram-worthy shots, bringing your dog adds authenticity and lots of laughs.

Tip 1: Let Your Photographer Know Ahead of Time

Yes, I absolutely love photographing dogs. But please let me know you’re bringing your pup when you book.

Why?

  • It helps me pick the perfect location where your pup is welcome and can safely roam
  • I can bring extra treats and plan my gear
  • I plan poses and playful prompts that seamlessly include your dog in the fun

A heads-up lets me plan to make the most of our time and get the best variety of shots.

Tip 2: Tire Them Out First (Seriously It Helps So Much)

Want a relaxed, cooperative dog in your photos? A photo session with dog goes so much better when your pup has burned off some energy.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Play fetch or go on a brisk walk before you head to the session
  • Let them run around the yard or local dog park
  • Aim for some tongue-out tiredness (but not total exhaustion)

“I didn’t think about walking my dog first… and she spent half the session pulling on the leash. Lesson learned!”

Tip 3: Bring Treats and Toys

Snacks = attention. Always bring your dog’s favorite treats to a photo session with dog. Bonus points for:

  • My favorite dog treats: Rachael Ray Nutrish Burger Bites — soft, yummy, and pup-approved
  • A squeaky toy or ball to grab their attention
  • A neutral-colored leash or harness (in case it stays in the shot)

If we’re doing a family session with young kids and your dog, a helper is especially helpful so we can rotate focus without stress.

Tip 4: Don’t Expect Perfection Expect Real Moments

Your dog might not sit still. Your toddler might run. And that’s totally okay.

In fact, that’s kind of the point.

When you do a photo session with dog, you’re choosing to capture real life not staged, stiff smiles. Some of the best moments happen when:

  • Your dog jumps up to lick your face
  • Your kids and pup chase each other
  • You laugh mid-chaos and forget the camera is there

“I was hoping for one good photo with the dog… I got like 20 I love.”

Tip 5: Keep Your Outfits Comfortable and Cohesive

Worried about what to wear for your photo session with dog? Here’s the vibe I recommend:

  • Soft, neutral colors that won’t clash with your dog’s fur
  • Flowy dresses, casual jeans, layered textures (knit, linen, denim)
  • Avoid stiff or formal outfits, especially if we’ll be sitting on the ground or running around
  • Choose a leash or bandana for your dog that blends in (earth tones, classic patterns) You can even coordinate their look with your family outfits by picking a neck bandana that complements your color palette. It’s a simple touch that ties everything together beautifully.

Pro tip: if your pup sheds, bring a lint roller and skip black tops!

Tip 6: Keep Your Dog’s Leash Low Key (Because I Don’t Photoshop It Out)

Let’s talk leashes. They might not seem like a big deal, but they can have a major impact on the overall feel of your photo session. Think of them like socks with sandals. They serve a purpose, but they can easily throw off the entire look.

When you are preparing for your session with your dog, choose a leash that is simple and neutral in color. Soft tones like beige, black, or earthy greens blend beautifully into the background. A slim, minimal design works best. Bold, bright, or bulky leashes tend to draw attention and can take away from the emotional connection in your photos.

Just a heads up. I do not remove leashes in editing. I believe in keeping your session honest, beautiful, and natural. My goal is to document real life in a way that still feels elevated.

A little tip. Remove anything that creates unnecessary visual clutter. Oversized poop bag holders, noisy tags, or anything extra can distract from the clean, connected images we are trying to create. The fewer distractions, the more your story can shine through.

The smallest details really do matter. Choosing a simple leash can help your dog feel more like part of the moment rather than a prop. And it allows your love, your connection, and your story to take center stage.

FAQsFrequently Asked Questions About Photo Sessions With Dogs

Q: What if my dog is reactive or anxious?
A: That’s okay! I’ve photographed all kinds of dogs, and we can absolutely create a calm, safe session. We’ll choose a quiet location, bring lots of treats, and go at your dog’s pace.

Q: Can we do a photo session that’s just me and my dog?
A: 100% yes. These are some of my favorite sessions. You’ll never regret having photos that celebrate your relationship with your pet.

Q: What if it doesn’t go as planned?
A: It rarely goes perfectly and that’s part of the magic. Dogs will be dogs, and I’ll capture the moments in between that show your bond.

Why a Photo Session With Dog Is Always Worth It

Years from now, you won’t remember how your dog behaved at the session. You’ll remember how they loved you, how they made you laugh, and how you showed up together, just as you are.

That’s what a photo session with dog gives you.

Whether it’s a full family photo shoot, a solo portrait session, or a just because shoot with your best fur friend, I promise you’ll walk away with something real, something beautiful, and something you’ll be proud to share.
